Diversions, Diversions

Due to bad weather on the east coast, many flights bound for various east coast cities like Boston, and New York were diverted to Syracuse. They were as follows: US 711 -a 762 from Zurich, DL 632-a 752 from Seattle, JB 174-an A320 from San Jose CA, CO 71- a 764 from Amsterdam, JB 1290-an E190 from Pittsburgh, AA 258-a 752 from Las Vegas, NW 630-an A319 from Memphis, NW 542-an A320 from Detroit, COM (Delta connection) 537-a CR1 from Buffalo, AA 710-A 738 from Dallas-Fort Worth, US 701-an A333 from Frankfurt, US 753-a 762 from Stockholm, CO 818-a 735 from Houston, JB 594-an A320 from Orlando, Dl 10-a 752 from Los Angeles, and KLM 641-a 744 from Amsterdam. All of these flights eventually proceeded to there final destinations after varying periods of time in Syracuse.
Harborfest
Last weekend was Harborfest time in Oswego, NY, an event which I went to. At one point I looked up and saw 4 ultralights flying around and they were all the same design withy a parasail for a wing connected to a small frame with 3 wheels, an engine, small gas tank, and a seat. The fireworks show on SAturday night which is one of the biggest in the country was made even more spectacular this year by the presence of a thunderstorm to the east whose lightning display added a magic backdrop to show and made it the best fireworks display I've ever seen.

Jetways and aircraft doors

Over the weekend there were 2 incidents where aircraft doors and jetways connected in ways that they shouldn't (BTW no one was hurt in either incident). In the first incident, a Lufthansa A340-300 that was about to depart Denver for Munich had it's left front passenger door ripped off when the jetway lowered while door was still opened and the door was torn cleanly off. The flight was canceled and plane was taken out of service. See the following link: http://avherald.com/h?article=409f5eb1&opt=0
In the second incident, a Sterling flight that had just arrived at Malaga from Copenhagen was tipped almost onto it's back when the jetway hooked the front left door a caused the nose to rise. The plane settled with it's tail about a foot above the ground and it didn't appear to sustain any major damage although I'm sure the door is going to need some repair because it isn't designed to take the load of half the plane. Rochester Airshow
There is going to be an airshow at Greater Rochester International Airport this weekend. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend it as I have a previous commitment at Oswego's Harborfest.

One less CVG flight

The fall schedule for Delta flights out of Syracuse shows only 2 flights to Cincinnati (CVG) instead of the previous 3 with the midday flight being the one cut. This is not as great a loss as it might seem as Delta is paring down the CVG hub with flights to Akron, Toledo, and Lansing being among those eliminated. If the NWA merger goes through, I wouldn't be surprised to see CVG de-hubbed and become a simple spoke city like Syracuse is.
Buffalo-Lancaster and Camillus airports
While taking to train to Buffalo recently, I had the pleasure to go past the previously 2 mentioned airfields as they both parallel the train tracks. They both seemed quite active and on my way back to Syracuse, I saw a plane getting ready to take off from Buffalo Lancaster.
Northwest Emergency
An NWA flight from Detroit to SYR had to make an emergency landing last Sunday due to smoke issues. None of the 45 people on board were hurt and the plane wasn't seriously damaged. The plane type wasn't mentioned but judging by the flight # (3404) I'd say that it's a CRJ-900.

More Dash 8's

The fall schedule for SYR-New York LaGuardia flights, which are now operated by Colgan Air/US Airways Express Saab 340's, shows that Piedmont/US Airways Express Dash-8-100's will be taking over and this will mean an increase of 3 seats per flight as the Dash 8 seats 37 verses the 34 for the Saab. This route and a few others that Colgan operates are being shifted over to Piedmont due to a payment dispute between Colgan and US Airways. Also CO's SYR-Newark route is showing three Dash-8 flights with one of them being a 70-seat 400 and the other two being 37-seat 200's and a fourth E-145 flight. The SYR-Cleveland route is showing 3 E145's and one Dash-8-200. As far as capacity goes this will mean that both of CO's route out of SYR will have 190 seats each.
New Ithaca flights
Starting this fall, CO is due to start four daily Dash-8-200 flights from Ithaca to Newark which will mark a return for CO to ITH which it last served a few years ago. Also NW is due to upgrade the mourning ITH-DTW flight from a Saab-340 to a CRJ-200 which will be an increase of around 16 seats on that route with the other flight remaining a Saab.
