The Pan Am Boeing 747-121, N739PA, Clipper Maid of the Seas, operating as flight 103 from London's Heathrow airport to New York John F Kennedy airport was destroyed by a small bomb which tore it's nose section off at approximately 19:03 local time over Lockerbie, Scotland. The crash killed all 259 people aboard and 11 others on the ground. Among those killed were 35 students from Syracuse University and 2 students from SUNY Oswego. A memorial to those 35 SU students was subsequently built in front of the Hall of Languages at SU. for more info see the following links:
http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19881221-0
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Am_Flight_103
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7777553.stmchristianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-76394669621831881712008-12-19T20:17:00.000-08:002008-12-19T20:29:06.619-08:00Potential SYR RenovationsA plan was recently released that would result in a major renovation of Syracuse airport terminal. The plan calls for among other things moving the baggage screening machines into a new first floor area behind the ticket counters that will allow the space that they occupy now to be reclaimed for the public. Another aspect involve constructing a new second floor central security check point and a second floor bridge to connect the two concourses. This would probably involve obliterating the airport exhibit and there's no word as to whether anything might replace it. The parking garage would still be a viable viewing place but the view fo the terminal might be degraded but the runways would still be visible. The renovation would also include energy efficient savings and food service improvements. The plan still has to be approved by the Syracuse Common Council.
http://news10now.com/Default.aspx?ArID=130224
Snowy weekend
Today was a very snowy day across New York state and northeast with many flight cancelations as a result. The plane has been under restoration for a while now and the plan is dismantle it and move it by road to Seattle, WA where it will be displayed by it's owner, the Museum of Flight. The move is planned to take place in the spring when the chances of getting it there intact is higher than during the winter. Why they aren't moving by air or by barge which might not be as fast but would decrease the chance of damage is beyond me. http://skyliner-aviation.de/viewphoto.main?LC=nav2&picid=5228
Delta matters
All 4 of Delta's flights between SYR and Atlanta are now all operated by CRJ-700's which seat 70 people verses the CRJ-100's which only seat 50. Now that the merger between NWA and Delta has been approved where 2 will consolidate their operations in SYR is not known but I imagine that NWA will move over to the north terminal because their is more space available there than the south terminal. The detroit flights will probably stay but those to Cincinnati because CVG's hub status is questionable due to the closeness of both Detroit and Atlanta.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-72580813031630607692008-10-26T18:17:00.000-07:002008-10-26T19:02:49.359-07:00ElmiraElmira-Corning Regional Airport located 6 miles northwest of the city of Elmira in the Big Flats area with the Southern Tier Expressway/Interstate 86 (I-86) forming it's southern perimeter. These machines which accept cash and credit cards are located with the terminal building. Why it was here is a mystery and it's not sports related. I think it might be a group that was up here from SC from some reason and they chartered a plane to get them here. Normally whenever Allegiant air is here it's on gambling related charters and the planes don't spend much time here and yet this one spent over 24 hours here.
Airlines ceasing operations
Three airlines, Xl Airways of the UK, Zoom Airlines of Canada and the UK, and Futura Airlines of Spain have recently suspended operations. This is due to the global recent fuel price hikes and economic downturn that has left some companies (and individuals) struggling to pay their bills and as result some them fail. This is somewhat similar to what happened after 9/11/01 when the resulting drop in air travel forced many companies to go under or seek bankruptcy protection with the Belgian airline SABENA and the Swiss Swissair being among those that didn't make it.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-67595830994216824152008-09-03T19:21:00.000-07:002008-09-03T19:46:12.079-07:00More Dash-8's, less Saab-340'sAs of this month there are only 3 Saab-340 flights a day out of Syracuse and these operate Us Airways Express's flights to Boston. they've been replaced on the La Guardia route by Dash-8's which seat 3 more people per plane. In the past Saab's have operated flights to Hartford, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Newark, New York-JFK (a flight which I took a few times) and a few other routes from SYR. They have been operated by US Airways Express, Business Express, and American Eagle on flights to and from SYR.
Plane crashes
There have been a rash of plane crashes recently. A 737-200 of Itek Air crashed while it was trying to return to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan airport and burned out killing 65 and injuring the remaining 25 people. Another 737-200 overran the runway while landing at a small airport in Indonesia injuring 2 people on the ground and severely damaging if not writing off the plane. A Conviasa 737-200 which was being delivered to a new owner in Ecuador hit a mountain killing all 3 people aboard. Finally a few days ago an Air Tahoma Convair-580 crashed in a field near Columbus, Ohio killing all 3 people aboard. All off these accidents happened in separate places and to different operators and right now there appears to be no link to them.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-40152793100536038332008-08-14T18:43:00.000-07:002008-08-14T19:04:16.288-07:00TransaeroLast week Transaero's first 777-200, a former United example which was previously painted in Royal Brunei Airlines colors (for a deal which fell through) was delivered to the russian carrier from Empire Aero's Rome, NY facility.
8/14/08 Diversions
There were a few diversions into Syracuse today with a pair of Delta 757-200's from LA and San Francisco and a pair fo AA Md-80's from Dallas and Chicago.
Tunica, Miss
Today there was Allegiant Air MD-80 charter flight that arrived from Tunica Muni Airport. They were as follows: US 711 -a 762 from Zurich, DL 632-a 752 from Seattle, JB 174-an A320 from San Jose CA, CO 71- a 764 from Amsterdam, JB 1290-an E190 from Pittsburgh, AA 258-a 752 from Las Vegas, NW 630-an A319 from Memphis, NW 542-an A320 from Detroit, COM (Delta connection) 537-a CR1 from Buffalo, AA 710-A 738 from Dallas-Fort Worth, US 701-an A333 from Frankfurt, US 753-a 762 from Stockholm, CO 818-a 735 from Houston, JB 594-an A320 from Orlando, Dl 10-a 752 from Los Angeles, and KLM 641-a 744 from Amsterdam. All of these flights eventually proceeded to there final destinations after varying periods of time in Syracuse.
Harborfest
Last weekend was Harborfest time in Oswego, NY, an event which I went to. At one point I looked up and saw 4 ultralights flying around and they were all the same design withy a parasail for a wing connected to a small frame with 3 wheels, an engine, small gas tank, and a seat. The fireworks show on SAturday night which is one of the biggest in the country was made even more spectacular this year by the presence of a thunderstorm to the east whose lightning display added a magic backdrop to show and made it the best fireworks display I've ever seen.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-56536052078006638922008-07-22T17:52:00.002-07:002008-07-22T18:48:17.338-07:00Jetways and aircraft doorsOver the weekend there were 2 incidents where aircraft doors and jetways connected in ways that they shouldn't (BTW no one was hurt in either incident). In the first incident, a Lufthansa A340-300 that was about to depart Denver for Munich had it's left front passenger door ripped off when the jetway lowered while door was still opened and the door was torn cleanly off. The flight was canceled and plane was taken out of service. See the following link: http://avherald.com/h?article=409f5eb1&opt=0
In the second incident, a Sterling flight that had just arrived at Malaga from Copenhagen was tipped almost onto it's back when the jetway hooked the front left door a caused the nose to rise. The plane settled with it's tail about a foot above the ground and it didn't appear to sustain any major damage although I'm sure the door is going to need some repair because it isn't designed to take the load of half the plane. This is not as great a loss as it might seem as Delta is paring down the CVG hub with flights to Akron, Toledo, and Lansing being among those eliminated. If the NWA merger goes through, I wouldn't be surprised to see CVG de-hubbed and become a simple spoke city like Syracuse is.
Buffalo-Lancaster and Camillus airports
While taking to train to Buffalo recently, I had the pleasure to go past the previously 2 mentioned airfields as they both parallel the train tracks. They both seemed quite active and on my way back to Syracuse, I saw a plane getting ready to take off from Buffalo Lancaster.
Northwest Emergency
An NWA flight from Detroit to SYR had to make an emergency landing last Sunday due to smoke issues. None of the 45 people on board were hurt and the plane wasn't seriously damaged. The plane type wasn't mentioned but judging by the flight # (3404) I'd say that it's a CRJ-900.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-82404856602028018072008-07-06T18:10:00.000-07:002008-07-17T18:47:21.752-07:00More Dash 8'sThe fall schedule for SYR-New York LaGuardia flights, which are now operated by Colgan Air/US Airways Express Saab 340's, shows that Piedmont/US Airways Express Dash-8-100's will be taking over and this will mean an increase of 3 seats per flight as the Dash 8 seats 37 verses the 34 for the Saab. This route and a few others that Colgan operates are being shifted over to Piedmont due to a payment dispute between Colgan and US Airways. Also CO's SYR-Newark route is showing three Dash-8 flights with one of them being a 70-seat 400 and the other two being 37-seat 200's and a fourth E-145 flight. The SYR-Cleveland route is showing 3 E145's and one Dash-8-200. As far as capacity goes this will mean that both of CO's route out of SYR will have 190 seats each.
New Ithaca flights
Starting this fall, CO is due to start four daily Dash-8-200 flights from Ithaca to Newark which will mark a return for CO to ITH which it last served a few years ago. Also NW is due to upgrade the mourning ITH-DTW flight from a Saab-340 to a CRJ-200 which will be an increase of around 16 seats on that route with the other flight remaining a Saab.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-87887974043785827642008-06-30T10:30:00.001-07:002008-07-06T18:43:13.941-07:00No DallasAmerican Airlines recently announced that effective late November, the Syracuse Dallas-Fort Worth flight and on of their 4 daily Syracuse Chicago flights are going to be cut. This is part of nationwide scale back in operations resulting from the rising price of fuel and overall bad economy. The parking situation was bit chaotic and it resulting in me and my friend getting a front row parking spot. There was a KC-10, KC-135R, C-5A, B-25, B-17, DC-3, A-10, F-16, L-29 Delfin, BAE Strikemaster , two T-45's, two C-130's, and numerous smaller planes, drones, and helicopters on display. One of the drones was worth $300,000 yet was was 3 ft long, had a 4 ft wingspan, and was only 1 ft high. There was also numerous military vehicles on display including an M101 Abrams tank which one could walk on numerous artillery pieces and small arms that people could take a look at. The flying display wasn't too bad with the exception of an F-18F whose afterburner was very load (I was fortunate to be in the KC-10 at the time and it shielded me from some of the noise). The only part of the Syracuse airport that is visible is the general aviation part that one can see from Malden road. So far Syracuse has managed to avoid most of that mess with Pittsburgh being the only route lost and that route only had two 33-seat turboprop flights a day and PIT is no longer hub anyway. New York LGA has also gone down in frequency but that's more to do with competition from Jetblue at JFK than anything else. US Airways has in fact added a midday 90-seat CRJ-900 flight to Charlotte to their two A319 flights. The fall schedules look to stay the same as they were last year.
Piper Cub golf landing
A Piper Cub that was flying back to Vermont made an emergency landing on a golf course in the Watertown area due to engine problems recently. http://news10now.com/Default.aspx?ArID=117566christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-21716219783559112822008-05-29T17:15:00.000-07:002008-05-29T17:42:57.283-07:00MarsThe Mars Phoenix probe recently made only the 3rd soft landing (landing using retro-rockets and not airbags like the previous 3 landers), the others being Vikings 1,2 in the 1970's. Spaceflightnow, a spaceflight website, is a good site to follow the mission (http://spaceflightnow.com/). Another site is the University of Arizona's (who are the prime controllers of the mission) Phoenix mission page, http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/.
Kalitta Air 747
A 747-200F cargo jet operated by Kalitta Air recently aborted it's take-off at Brussels airport and skidded off the runway. The resulting damage was spectacular with the fuselage from over the middle of the wings aft splitting and going upward and the tail section pointing downward. The plane stayed in one piece, just one piece broken in various sections. None of the crew were hurt. for more info see the Aviation Safety Network entry at http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20080525-0.
Virgin America A319
Today a Virgin american A319 flew into Griffiss from Columbus, Ohio for maintenance. What makes this flight unusual is that the plane involved is probably an a former Skybus Airlines plane. Skybus was a low-fare carrier that was based out of Columbus and operated to mostly secondary airports like Westover, MA. Unfortunately the carrier didn't survive long and ceased operations a few months ago and now it's planes which were all A319's are going to other carriers.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-71750062979399233242008-05-18T16:18:00.000-07:002008-05-18T17:30:33.453-07:00New types serving SyracuseRecently Northwest and Continental starting serving SYR with new types of airplanes the CRJ-900 and Dash-8 Q400.
The CRJ-900 (CR9) is a 76 seater twin-jet regional jet with the first four rows consisting of 1x2 first class eating with the other 26 being 2x2 economy class. This type is partially replacing the older DC9's in NWA's fleet (almost all of the DC9's are 30 years old or more) and while it may seat less it is a lot quieter, is just as fast, and is just as comfortable.
The Dash 8-Q400 is a twin turboprop 76 seater with 2x2 all economy seating that is operated by Colgan Air on Continental's behalf as Continental Connection mostly out of Newark. I recently flew on one of them and can say that the noise volume is no lauder than that of a jet and the ride just as smooth with very comfortable seating. A novel feature I found was a small mini cup holder that is part of the regular seating try so you don't have to bring the whole tray down if you want to put your drink down. Also the Q400 can use jetways and in both Newark and Syracuse, that's how o got on/off the plane.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-88097709167689486702008-05-03T18:20:00.000-07:002008-05-03T18:40:54.651-07:00SpaceflightOne of my interests besides aviation is spaceflight and the following sites are ones that I look at often and consider to be some fo the best. They are listed with the title, address , and a brief description.

Guenter's Space page, http://skyrocket.de/space/, a site about rockets/missiles and satellites (orbital, suborbital, military, civilian) from around the world with many pictures and updated whenever a new satellite or rocket is launched.

Internet Reference guide to space launch vehicles, http://hometown.aol.de/B14643/space-rockets/, a site about orbital rockets from around the world with diagrams of the vehicles and hundreds of pictures of the rockets themselves.

Space Facts, http://spacefacts.de/, a site about manned spaceflights both orbital and suborbital with bios and pics on the crew members both flown and unflown (those selected but who didn't fly for whatever reason).

Project Apollo Archive, http://www.apolloarchive.com/, a siet about the apollo project with everything you would want to know about it.

Capcom Espace, http://www.capcomespace.net/dossiers/, a french-language site about spaceflight with particular emphasis on european spaceflight history with numerous rare pictures (even some of the pictures on parts dealing others like project apollo are very rare).

NASA, http://www.nasa.gov/, the main site for NASA with links to various projects that the agency has/is been involved with and one that should be explored to the full.christianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-8847344425492309422008-04-28T11:32:00.000-07:002008-04-28T11:44:10.365-07:00Cacthing upSorry for the long delay in updating this blog as some systems had changed and it took me a while to understand the new ones.
US Airways appears to be dropping PIT as it doesn't appear in any of the summer schedules (how is hung on as long as it did is beyond me). US is adding a midday CRJ-900 flight to Charlotte but the mourning mainline flight is now an E-190 compared to a larger A319. Also Continental's mid-mourning Newark flight is going from a 50 seat E145 to a 70 seat Q400 effective next month. Delta is cutting one of their Atlanta flights (they are doing this to many cities) but one of the others is going from a 50 seat CRJ-100 to a 70-seat CRJ-700 so the net loss is 30 seats. A Lake Renegade seaplane crashed recently in Skaneatelas killing one person a seriously injuring another. That's all for nowchristianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2311921264533308064.post-90951720887364496552008-03-25T17:41:00.000-07:002008-03-25T17:52:03.867-07:00ConnieAccording to a recent article in Air Classics magazine, an ex Trans Canada/Air Canada Lockheed Super Constellation that until recently was on display At Toronto International Airport is now undergoing restoration at Empire Aero in Rome, NY. It's being restored on behalf of the Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA and once it's restoration is completed hopefully by the end of the summer, it will the then be dismantled and transported to Seattle for display (the method of transport is yet to be determined although the author feels that something like airlifting by AN-124 would be the best method as opposed to a long cross-country road trip). I personally saw this plane in Toronto when it was being used a conference facility outside the Regal Constellation Hotel (a venture that failed) and if you want more info go to
http://rbogash.com/connie.htmlchristianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00301966358455196745noreply@blogger.com0
