No Dallas

American Airlines recently announced that effective late November, the Syracuse Dallas-Fort Worth flight and on of their 4 daily Syracuse Chicago flights are going to be cut. This is part of nationwide scale back in operations resulting from the rising price of fuel and overall bad economy. This could have been worse as some cities like Harrisburg (which has 2 ORD flights a one to DFW) are losing service from American and other airlines entirely.

Fort Drum 100 anniversary Airshow
On Sunday, June 29th I attended Fort Drum's 100 anniversary airshow which is the first large airshow that the base has hosted. The parking situation was bit chaotic and it resulting in me and my friend getting a front row parking spot. There was a KC-10, KC-135R, C-5A, B-25, B-17, DC-3, A-10, F-16, L-29 Delfin, BAE Strikemaster , two T-45's, two C-130's, and numerous smaller planes, drones, and helicopters on display. One of the drones was worth $300,000 yet was was 3 ft long, had a 4 ft wingspan, and was only 1 ft high. There was also numerous military vehicles on display including an M101 Abrams tank which one could walk on numerous artillery pieces and small arms that people could take a look at. The flying display wasn't too bad with the exception of an F-18F whose afterburner was very load (I was fortunate to be in the KC-10 at the time and it shielded me from some of the noise). Sun Country 738
A Sun Country 737-800 flew into Syracuse last weekend from Fort McCory, Wisconsin with members of an engineering battalion who had just served a year in Iraq. Footage of the return of the soldiers and their plane can be seen here:

Google Maps Street views.
Google recently added Syracuse to the list of cities for which they have street views of. The only part of the Syracuse airport that is visible is the general aviation part that one can see from Malden road. This tool is more useful for looking things like houses and other small structures or roads than can easily be seen from a public road rather than a larger structure like an airport terminal that is partially blocked by a fence.

Airline Troubles

Recently, due the soaring cost of fuel and the bad economy, many airlines have announced massive cutbacks in service with some cities like Toledo suffering the pullout of an airline or the loss of a route/reduction in frequency. So far Syracuse has managed to avoid most of that mess with Pittsburgh being the only route lost and that route only had two 33-seat turboprop flights a day and PIT is no longer hub anyway. New York LGA has also gone down in frequency but that's more to do with competition from Jetblue at JFK than anything else. US Airways has in fact added a midday 90-seat CRJ-900 flight to Charlotte to their two A319 flights. The fall schedules look to stay the same as they were last year.
